What to plant for seedlings in March 2018. Calendar planting flowers and vegetables
Good all the time of day.
Spring is coming. And along with it spring garden efforts increase. Although some planting work begins in February, the main peak still occurs in the first spring month.
In February, seedlings are sown mainly in the north of our region. There are few sunny days, and rather cold. Therefore, it is necessary to engage in planting earlier. Seedlings sprout longer, more difficult to adapt. There is even an unwritten rule that for the development of seedlings in the north two days, as in the south one.
If you follow the growth and development of seedlings, then in the south they need less time to do so. Therefore, what is planted in the north in February, in the south, is done in March.
In any case, in each region, it is primarily taken into account, for how long a particular plant springs after sowing. And also takes into account the growing season and the timing of its disembarkation in open ground. And also where you will plant the grown up and got stronger plant — on the street, or in the greenhouse.
From this calculation and we consider, calculating the most convenient and correct day for this.
So in March, most of the gardeners are already quite densely engaged in preparing and planting seeds in the soil. But there are those who only make lists of the necessary crops, the seedlings of which will later be purchased on the market, and those already grown will plant in their garden.
However, within the framework of this article we will speak about seedlings, their planting and preparation for planting in open ground.
Lunar calendar planting seedlings in March 2018
I want to start with the lunar calendar. Many gardeners one way or another are guided by favorable days to start work. Therefore, the following days, which indicate when and what can be planted, will help orient.
The full moon, during which no work can be done, falls on March 2 and 31. And also are prohibited 16, 17, 18 number.
From March 10 to 13 it is best to sow the seeds of onions, celery, replant low-growing varieties of tomatoes.
From March 19 to March 20 it’s time to soak and sow cucumber seeds for heated greenhouses. From March 20 to March 22 — the same, but for tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, physalis, early ripe cauliflower and white cabbage, broccoli, Peking cabbage.
In addition, the figure below will help you navigate at what time, what plants you can sow.
Let me remind also that not everyone is so strictly oriented on the calendar. They do not carry out planting work only in the days of the full moon and new moon. On the remaining days, they freely plant, transplant, water, and plant.
And someone adheres to such a rule that planting and sowing is best on the so-called “women’s” days, that is, days whose names end with the letter “A”. This is Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Anyway, it is necessary to start landing only with good mood and desire.
Now let’s look specifically at what crops are sown on seedlings in March. And although we have already landed many of them back in February, not all of them have done so. For many, it is the most valuable month for working with seeds and land.
In addition, we must not forget that the timing of planting is directly dependent on the climate and on a particular region.
Sowing tomato seeds in the first spring of 2018
When sowing tomato seedlings on seedlings, there are usually always several factors that are considered.
- the climate of a particular region
- variety of tomatoes and their growing season
- age of seedlings at the time of their landing in open ground
- where they will land — on the street, or in the greenhouse
These are the most basic criteria for planting, but there are also a number of indirect ones.
Varieties of tomatoes can be divided into three main categories according to their ripening terms. And it depends on when you need to sow the seeds of one or another variety.
- early maturing varieties — from 45 to 50 days;
- middle ripening — from 55 to 60 days;
- late ripening — 70 days;
If you have tall varieties, you can sow from February 20 to March 10. From 10 to 22, early and mid-season varieties are sown. Ultra early, as well as cherry tomatoes are planted at the end of the month, or the beginning of April.
To correctly determine the time of planting, it is enough to know what varieties you have. This is written on the package with seeds. Also there are written and the terms from the emergence of seedlings and before the maturation of the culture, that is, the vegetative period. It is usually equal to one hundred days. We add to them for about a week, during which the seeds usually sprout, well, and another three days for adaptation.
As a result, we obtain the most accurate time for planting when planting a particular variety. For example, if early varieties are sown at the end of March, then by the beginning of June they can be planted in the ground, and in July we will receive the first crop.
As a rule, seeds are sown in plastic or wooden boxes. In this case, the grown seedlings will need to dive. If you do not want to do this, you can immediately put in separate cassettes, or peat pots. And also lately, planting in peat tablets has become very popular. Or simply put in plastic cups of sour cream. You can learn more about this in the next article.
Here everyone chooses for himself the most convenient way.
Before planting, the first thing you need to do is prepare the seeds: sort, disinfect and soak them. After that, land them to a depth of no more than 1.5 centimeters. Seed tanks must be covered with plastic wrap. In the room where the boxes are located with seeds, the temperature should be from 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.
In general, light and temperature conditions are very important for the growth and development of any seedlings. Therefore, it is important to provide them with light for at least 12 hours. And for this it is necessary to install additional lighting for them in the form of special lamps or fluorescent lamps.
Already grown seedlings can be planted in glass greenhouses starting from the end of March. But this, of course, for the southern regions. And for the northern regions, the dates can be postponed for a month, or one and a half, depending on the weather. In usual film greenhouses saplings are planted two weeks later.
How to plant on the seedlings Bulgarian pepper
In March, it is good to sow pepper seeds as well. If this work is carried out in the period of the growing moon, then the growth of green mass will occur very actively and the seedlings will grow strong and strong.
When planting, it should be borne in mind that the growing season of seedlings is quite large, and reaches 140 days. Also pepper has a long germination. So, if the mini-greenhouse is provided with a temperature of 25 — 28 degrees Celsius, then shoots will appear only on day 10. If the temperature is much lower, for example 15 — 16 degrees, then the seeds can rise up to one month.
If you live in a cold climate region, then sow the seeds should be without delay, right in early March. Otherwise, the harvest can not wait. And it is better to do it in February.
For warmer areas, seeds can be sown later. And in any case, take into account the fact that at home it is not worth much to overdo. Otherwise, the seedlings when disembarking into the ground can be ill for a long time, slowly adapt and even die.
Since the root system of the pepper is weak, it is necessary to sow the seeds immediately in separate cups in order not to dive the seedlings. This must be taken into account when landing.
The second important condition is temperature. During the day it should be at least 20-25 degrees, and at night — at least 15-18 degrees Celsius.
As for illumination, then, unlike tomatoes, peppers do not need additional light. And after the first shoots appear, the temperature can be reduced to 16 degrees.
In this video you can see when and how to plant Bulgarian pepper.
Watch the video without fail; it describes in detail all the conditions for the proper cultivation of seedlings of the Bulgarian pepper. It is short and useful.
Another traditional culture is eggplants. If earlier they were grown only in the southern regions of our country, nowadays they are successfully grown in the northern regions.
Eggplants are warm and light-loving. Seedlings are grown almost the same way as tomatoes. Seeds have been planted since mid-March. Since that vegetable culture requires full daylight hours, it will be necessary to take care of additional lighting. Provide seedlings with light for 12 — 14 hours. At night, it must be turned off for the plants to rest.
When sowing seeds, the main condition is a good, loose soil. It can be purchased at the store. Although many have been storing it themselves since the fall. To do this, take a mixture of turf land, humus and peat and mix. If all conditions are met, in a month and a half there will be good strong seedlings and, naturally, a wonderful harvest in the future.
For central Russia, early and mid-season eggplant varieties are best suited. The term of their ripening is much less than that of the later ones.
It is best to plant them in the open ground somewhere after June 10th. Eggplants are very thermophilic, therefore, when disembarking them on the street, or in a greenhouse, it should already be warm enough, including at night. The vegetative period is about 90 days. If you count this period back, we get that you can sow the seeds in the first half of the month.
Cabbage, perhaps the most popular among summer residents culture. What only varieties they do not grow in their gardens. But the most common is of course the White.
The most suitable varieties for sowing for seedlings in the first month of spring will be such as early and middle ripe cabbage, early ripe cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and early ripe Savoy cabbage.
The first shoots of cabbage usually appear after 10 days. After 50 days, seedlings are finally formed and two months after sowing the seeds, they can be transplanted into the ground. Early varieties to normally mature need from 90 to 120 days.
Too early to sow cabbage, because it, like tomatoes, with a lack of light will begin to stretch. As a result, seedlings will be weak and will be unsuitable for further cultivation.
In addition, weak frail plants are susceptible to such a disease as “black leg”
Pumpkin plant is interesting, but very few grow it in the garden. However, it happens that a couple of plants still find their place at their summer cottage.
When planting seedlings in open ground, their age must be at least 30 days. If we add five more days here, which will go to the emergence of shoots, we will get the dates for sowing seeds for seedlings.
Unlike other garden crops, pumpkin seeds are prepared long before planting. Usually, in order to get more female flowers — it is from them that the fruits then develop, the seeds warm up on the battery for about two months. After that they are sorted. Prepare a solution of salt and throw seeds into it.
Those that surfaced are thrown away. The rest are germinated and after the appearance of the root — are sown in the soil. Sowing takes place 20 days before they are planted in the ground. It is best to grow seedlings directly in peat pots. Then plant seedlings in the ground right in them. When watering peat soak and mix with the ground. But for this it is necessary to water the seedlings in a timely manner and not just to spray, but to water.
The temperature regime for plant growth and development should be 8-25 ° C during the day and 15-18 ° C at night. After the emergence of seedlings, the temperature drops during the day to 15–18 ° C and at night to 12–13 ° C. However, after 6 days everything can be returned to the same conditions. This weekly period with decreasing temperature should not allow the seedlings to stretch.
Watering shoots regularly, but without transfusion. Seven days after the appearance, it is necessary to feed with a solution of nitrophoska (15 g per 10 l).
After a stable heat is established, the seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place.
Well, another popular and tasty vegetable is beets.
For seedlings beet seeds are sown at the end of the month. In principle, even in April it can be sown, since beets should be planted in the open ground no earlier than mid-May. This culture does not like the cold. But if you are going to grow it in a greenhouse, then you can do sowing in March.
Since the plant does not tolerate frosts poorly, it is planted in the soil only when the soil warms up to +8 — + 10 ° С.
What is beneficial sowing beet seedlings? The fact that the first harvest you get 25 days earlier than when you disembark immediately into the ground.
Before planting, the seeds are germinated.
You can sow seeds in wooden or plastic boxes. After you lay the seeds on the ground, they should be covered with a small layer of soil and rammed a little. After this, the crop is watered. The seed box is covered with polyethylene and kept until germination at a temperature of +18 — + 20 ° С. After the emergence of seedlings, the temperature decreases to + 16 ° С.
In order not to dive beets, it is better to sow it immediately in separate cups. Once every two weeks the seedlings are fed with liquid fertilizer such as Fertik, Weaving or Fortress.
Also in the last article, we looked at how to plant celery seeds, leek, parsley and remontant strawberries. Therefore, we will not repeat and move on to decorating our garden — to flowers.
In February, we planted a petunia, in the same way we told how to plant begonia.
And in this spring, a very large number of flowers are also planted on the seedlings.
If you do not grow primrose on the site, then it’s time to plant its seeds. There are over a thousand varieties and hybrids. Grow it in open ground and in containers. But we must bear in mind that the germination of seeds in it is quite low. It can be raised by preliminary stratification, otherwise hardening.
After the emergence of seedlings, the plant must provide warmth and sufficient light. After planting plants in open ground, it is not quite whimsical. Blooms profusely in early spring, and may bloom again at the end of summer.
Loves the sun and loose soil. It can grow in partial shade, but at the same time the flowers will be much smaller, and they themselves will not be as large as in the sun.
Very beautiful flower that blooms almost to frost. The plant is not very tall, compact, with beautiful colors of the original color. Looks like colored small daisies. It is enough to plant several such plants on a bed, and they will delight us with abundant flowering all season.
It is best to sow the seeds immediately in separate containers. But in case of shortage of space, you can first plant in a common container at a distance of 3 centimeters from each other. Or, put them first in peat tablets, and then transplanted directly in this tablet into individual cassettes.
Feature of successful cultivation is the temperature and light conditions. For a sapling, illumination not less than 12-14 hours is necessary. Also, in order for the plant to be strong, it must be fed with complex fertilizers, about once every two to three weeks.
When landing in the ground, consider the fact that the gatsania is a sun-loving flower. Therefore, select for her the appropriate places for transplantation.
Depending on the cultivar, seeds begin to be planted in late January, especially the varietal carnation. A more simple, such as ordinary grass, sown just in March. The soil for cultivation is selected from peat, garden soil with the addition of sand.
Sow the seeds in common containers, and when two true leaves appear, they dive into separate pots. Weak plants are removed.
With the onset of heat planted in open ground. As a rule, this can be done in May. This perennial, unpretentious plant love to grow on all sorts of alpine slides.
They love to plant Chinese carnations on their plots. She is very beautiful, inflorescences usually have a terry multi-colored form. This variety is not afraid of frost, and can withstand temperatures up to — 15 degrees.
In addition to these flowers, seeds of balsam, lobelia, salvia, snapdragon, bells, phlox and other lesser known flowers are sown in seedlings in March.
And also you can see in the table what other flowers you need to plant in the first month of spring.
