Growing onions from seeds in one season at home
Good all the time of day!
Garden planting time is almost coming on the heels, even despite some vagaries of nature.
Planting seedlings at gardeners in full swing. Peppers, tomatoes probably already planted. Also, like eggplant and many flowers. And all the other cultures, for which the time has also come, are already preparing for this.
One of these popular garden crops is onions. Many at the same time sow it for seedlings, sowing seeds, and someone plants sevok, sometimes on greens, and sometimes for the growth of good strong heads.
Whatever it was, in order to grow a good harvest, it is best to use high-yielding ripening varieties. Therefore, when you buy seeds in the store, pay attention to the information on the package.
When selecting seeds for growing “turnips”, it is necessary to take into account the fact that the variety has an early or at least average ripening period. And also the fact that these seeds were collected last year.
It is worth noting that among annuals, such varieties as exibichen and chalcedony are considered the best. Keep this in mind when buying seeds.
If you decide to plant it through seedlings, then you must first choose the right soil. For this, it is best to stock up your own garden land in the fall, with the addition of humus and a small amount of wood ash.
After preparing the ground, take the desired container — the box, or individual cells. Seeds must be dried thoroughly. In a common container, the seeds should be sown at a distance of 1 cm from each other, and then covered with soil a centimeter by two. In cassettes of two to three seeds. And in fact, and in another case, cover planting with polyethylene, and withstand at a temperature of 24 — 25 degrees. Wait for germination.
Seeds are also planted in the «snail» way. This is done on toilet paper, and just on the ground. This method will be discussed in the video, which you can find further in the article.
As soon as the first young shoots appear, the shelter can be removed. At the same time the temperature drops to 20 degrees. In this mode, the seedlings in growth will not go much. Watering is necessary as the soil dries, and it is best done with a spray gun. If seedlings are planted in winter, then additional lighting is needed.
Before transplanting seedlings must be regularly fed. For these purposes, an infusion of chicken manure diluted in water in a ratio of 1:10 is well suited. Or use other fertilizers, such as Strength or Health.
Unlike other types of seedlings, onion seedlings do not necessarily dive. The only thing that can be done is to order it, removing the weakest specimens. It should be borne in mind that for the effective development and growth of seedlings, the distance between them should be a half to two centimeters.
After two months, the seedlings can begin to prepare for planting in open ground.
Before this important moment only good sprouts are selected. Leaves and roots must be cut to one-third. Immediately before the transplant, the ground is dug up and a bed is formed, grooves are made, which are thoroughly watered.
Planting small plants should be about 2 cm deep so that it feels stable enough in the ground. And between the rows must observe a distance that will be at least 50 cm.
After the plants are planted in their place, they must be watered abundantly and covered with mulch. After 3-4 days, the soil should be slightly loosened to have better access of air and water.
After such care and attention, your harvest will grow, and will certainly give good results.
In central Russia, the conditions for growing this crop are most favorable. For centuries, various technologies have been developed for its cultivation.
Most gardeners increasingly prefer to grow it from seed. Prepare them for seedlings begin in February. Choose, buy seeds, prepare the ground and containers for planting.
Then proceed directly to work with the seeds.
It is best to soak them in hot water, its temperature can be up to 50 degrees. In addition, boric acid can be added to the water. After that, the tissue is moistened with a growth stimulator, seeds are placed into it and left in a warm place for the night.
Further, everything is as usual. Seeds are sown in a container filled with earth and pre-moistened with water. They should be covered with cellophane or film and placed in a warm place. After the appearance of the first shoots, the film is removed.
- If it is overcast on the street, and the days are still short, the seedlings are highlighted throughout the day.
- The soil must be constantly wet. In order not to break the shoots, it is better to water them from the spray gun.
- Every 10 days, seedlings are fed with complex fertilizers. They are made according to the instructions on the package.
Growth must be monitored every day, and all necessary procedures must be carried out in a timely manner.
In March, seedlings can quietly harden on the balcony. By the middle of April, it becomes quite strong and lush, and it can be prepared for disembarkation at its summer cottage.
Among the many early varieties suitable for cultivation in the middle lane, I would like to mention such a variety as Sturon. It not only has early ripening, but also excellent taste. In addition, it has a fairly high germination rate and, consequently, high yields.
The only thing you should know that this variety is not suitable for obtaining a green pen.
One more early ripe grade to which it is worth paying attention is Stuttgarter Rizen. The same high-yielding and with great germination. He is loved by many gardeners for their excellent qualities.
And the last variety, which also cannot be ignored, is Centurion, a high-yielding onion, which is sown even on an industrial scale.
It has a slightly tangy taste and is very good for long-term storage. However, this variety is also grown on feather.
Growing this crop in greens is the most traditional way. Fresh vitaminchiki are always good. Many, for sure, put a glass with a sprouted head on the window sill and pinch off the emerging green feathers.
However, it is better to grow onions for greens with seeds rather than seeds. Duration of growth of greens grown by seeds with the introduction of feeding and proper care will be up to two years. Whereas from the heads — only a few weeks.
For planting crops for greens are well suited varieties such as batun, tiered onions, chives and leeks. These are all early-ripening varieties, because they can be planted immediately into the soil (spring).
If you grow green onion seeds in the fall, it is important to cover the beds well with snow and insulate with spruce branches.
When growing seedlings, the soil for planting should be prepared in the fall. Before this, the seeds must be germinated. Germinated seeds are planted in the ground to a depth of 1 cm. Moreover, they are sown for two months before the moment when they begin to plant sprouted greens in the soil.
Before the appearance of the first shoots, the temperature should be about 25 degrees. When they appear, the temperature must be lowered to 10 degrees, then raised again, but already to 20.
After the seedlings grow to 20 cm and 3-4 leaves appear on it, you can prepare it for planting on the street. This usually happens around the 15th of April.
Planting seedlings in a line with a row spacing up to 20 cm. At the same time, the roots are slightly pruned.
How can you grow a variety of seeds from seeds in one season?
In addition to growing onions for greens, planted it also on a turnip. To do this, selected varieties that have good quality heads. One of these varieties is a handsome man — Exibichen.
This variety has a rather large head size compared to others. The weight of one head reaches up to 700 — 800 grams. This variety came to us from Holland, and every year it is gaining more and more popularity.
As usual, in order to grow this magnificent variety, one must begin with preparing the soil. There are no special and special requirements for this. You can use the soil from the garden, as well as purchased in the store.
Planted seeds in small plastic containers with a lid. Then get a kind of mini-hothouse. But if there is no such container, you can use any boxes, pots, etc. Before sowing the seeds, they should be soaked for two days in room temperature, and even slightly warm, temperature.
Before planting the land plentifully watered. Sowing can be done quite densely, while the depth of the seeds is 1 cm. The box with planting should be wrapped with film material and put in a warm place, somewhere near the battery. The air temperature should not be less than 20 degrees. If the conditions are met, the germs will appear on day 7.
Sprouts appeared, and the film can be removed, and shoots put into the light. As they grow, mineral supplements are applied. Onion loves complex fertilizers.
Next begins hardening. The first time the plants can be taken out into the air in the warm time of the day just a couple of hours. In the future, that time can be gradually increased.
When the important moment of transplanting sprouts on the site comes, and this should be a steady warm weather, you can proceed to the procedure with a good mood. Since the bulbs have a large size as a result, this must be taken into account when transplanting. Therefore, the interval between rows is better to do at least 30, and between seedlings at least 20 cm. It is necessary to plant at a depth of at least 3 cm. The roots and shoots of the plant can be slightly trimmed.
After planting seedlings need to ensure regular watering. However, it is necessary to avoid overflow. Water for irrigation should be warm. It is also necessary to take care that the onions are not overgrown with weeds. For this purpose, used in the store chemical products that are made on the black earth about a week before the start of planting. This will help provide weed protection during the entire growth and maturation of the plants.
To protect the seedlings from parasites, experienced gardeners are advised to plant a number of carrots. It turns out that in a pair of these plants can easily cope with all sorts of parasites.
If you approach the matter correctly and carry out all the work correctly, in the fall you will get a great harvest.
Leek are very fond of growing gardeners of us in their summer cottages, it is a favorite and popular garden crop. As you know, he is a plant — biennial. But now they have learned to grow it all for the season.
If competently care for him, you can get the stems weighing from 100 to 600 grams. In addition, this variety is characterized by high cold resistance. The main advantage of a leek can be called a high concentration of vitamin C in it, which, by the way, it not only preserves during winter storage, but also saves it.
The peculiarity of this variety is that its seeds are able to germinate at air temperatures from -2 to 0 degrees. And this is the real miracle. But if you want them to sprout faster, and the seedlings turned out to be excellent, then warm conditions at 22 — 24 degrees is still preferable.
For better germination, seeds should be soaked in hot water, the temperature of which is 40 — 45 degrees. In this form, leave them for a day. Then hold the seeds, wrapping them in a damp napkin and placing them in a warm place, day 4, or 5. And only then sow in the soil.
Keep warm. And after the emergence of seedlings, the temperature should be lowered to about 16 degrees during the day. At night, it can be up to 10 degrees. This will be quite enough for all the seeds to sprout, and the sprouts that appear do not stretch too much. After that, the temperature rises again.
Do not forget to regularly water the seedlings, it is thin and should not wait until the ground dries. Feed every two weeks. When the plants get stronger and grow up, you can prepare them for hardening and planting on the plot in the ground for a permanent place. But it will happen no earlier than 6 — 8 weeks after the appearance of seedlings.
Leek is considered an unpretentious plant. However, subject to the correct conditions for its cultivation, you can get something for which he is loved. Namely, a thick white «leg», the diameter of which will reach 1.5 cm.
And finally, a video with details about growing leek.
